Geopolitical developments - Cables, pipelines and electricity

Geopolitical tensions with Turkey add a layer of complexity beyond the technical challenges. From a purely technical perspective, both cables and oil or gas pipelines must ensure the capacity to transport energy as well as the availability of energy at their source. For hydrocarbons, this requires oil wells, production facilities, and hydrocarbon processing infrastructure.

For cables, renewable energy sources such as sunlight, wind, photovoltaic systems, or wind turbines are essential, along with substations and electricity storage systems. The availability of electricity for the GSI and GREGY interconnections will depend on the pace of renewable energy installations, while the availability of natural gas will rely on the speed of new hydrocarbon discoveries entering production in the Southeastern Mediterranean by 2031.
